Skins, trails and XP levels explained

Last updated: November 4, 2026

Every round of Orb Arena gives you something back, even when you lose. You earn XP, climb player levels and unlock cosmetic skins and trails for your orb. None of these change how strong you are — a Void skin plays exactly like Classic — but they show off what you have achieved. This guide lists exactly how each part works.

How XP is earned

XP is awarded once, at the end of each round (or when you leave after being eaten). It is built from four things you did that round:

  • Mass: half a point of XP for every point of mass you finished with.
  • Survival: one XP for every second you stayed alive.
  • Placement: 8 XP for every orb you finished ahead of. With eleven orbs in a round, first place is worth 80 XP from placement alone.
  • Win: a flat 100 XP bonus if you won the Storm round.

As an example, finishing second with 300 mass after surviving the full three minutes gives about 150 (mass) + 180 (survival) + 72 (placement) = 402 XP. Winning the same round with the same mass would give 150 + 180 + 80 + 100 = 510 XP. The XP you gained is shown on the end-of-round screen, along with any new level.

The optional mass boost doubles the mass you gain from food for ten minutes, which also increases the mass part of your XP.

The level curve

Levels get gradually harder. Going from level n to level n + 1 costs 100 × n1.5 XP, rounded down. Your current level and a progress bar towards the next one appear in the lobby.

From levelXP to next level
1100
2282
3519
4800
51118
103162

In practice that means level 2 after one decent round, level 3 (the Comet trail) after a few more, and level 5 (the Circuit skin) after a solid evening of play. Level 10, which unlocks the Rainbow trail, takes real dedication: roughly 10,000 XP in total.

Free skins

Skins change how your orb is drawn — glowing grids, molten magma, swirling galaxies and more. Only your own orb wears them; rivals keep plain colours so you can always find yourself.

Free trails

Trails leave a stream of particles behind your orb as it moves. To keep the game smooth, trails automatically thin out when your device's frame rate drops and switch off if it drops a lot.

How unlocks are checked

Achievements are checked at the end of every round against your lifetime stats: total rounds played, total wins, total top-three finishes, your best-ever survival time, your best-ever mass and your level. "Reach mass 200" means reaching it in any single round, and "Survive 2:00" means staying alive for two minutes in one round. When something unlocks, a New skin unlocked! message appears on the end screen.

Open Skins & Trails in the lobby to see every item. Locked items show their requirement and your progress towards it, such as 3/5 rounds. Tap an unlocked item to equip it; your choice is remembered for next time.

Fast routes to each unlock

  • Neon Grid and Magma come naturally — just play.
  • Toxic and Bubble reward consistent top-three finishes. Play safely in the final circles; see the Storm guide.
  • Frost and Prism need big single-round mass. Use the mass boost and eat weakened rivals coming in from the Storm.
  • Plasma just needs two minutes alive. Use the forgiving first 45 seconds to grow, then avoid fights.
  • Galaxy, Gold Rush and Void are for winners. Be the biggest orb when the timer hits 0:00.

Premium cosmetics

A few extra skins (Aurora, Black Hole, Crown, Nebula, Solar Flare and a Season skin) and the Storm Champion trail are planned as optional purchases on our own website. They are shown as coming soon and cannot be bought yet. They will be purely cosmetic. See Pricing for details.

Resetting

Progress is saved on your device. The Reset progress button in the lobby wipes your XP, level, stats and free unlocks and puts you back on the Classic skin with no trail — useful if you want to earn everything again from scratch.
