12 .io Game Tips for Beginners (Eat-and-Grow Edition)
The one rule
Everything in an eat-and-grow game comes from one rule: bigger eats smaller. You start tiny, every pellet and smaller orb makes you bigger, and every bigger orb is a threat. The 12 tips below are ways to play that rule well.
Movement and awareness
1. Look at the edges of your screen, not your orb. Threats come from off-screen. The more of the screen you watch, the earlier you see danger.
2. Keep moving. A still orb is easy to line up a split on. Gentle, constant movement makes you a harder target.
3. Know your speed. Smaller orbs are faster. When you're small, use that speed. When you're big, plan your routes ahead.
Growing efficiently
4. Pellets first, players later. In the opening minute, pellets are free mass with no risk. Hunt players once you're clearly bigger than most orbs nearby.
5. Follow the dense areas. Pellets gather where few players are. A quiet area is a growth area.
6. Don't over-chase. If a target is pulling away, let it go. Chasing for too long drags you into danger or toward the Storm.
Dealing with bigger players
7. Assume every bigger orb will split at you. Stay outside the distance a half of them could reach.
8. Dodge sideways. Splits fly straight. Stepping across their path beats running directly away.
9. Use other orbs as shields. Moving so that another orb sits between you and a predator can make them change targets.
Using the Storm
10. Respect the ring. In Orb Arena the Storm ring shrinks during each round, and outside it you lose mass quickly. Head inward early, especially when you're big. Our Storm survival guide goes deeper.
11. Let the ring bring targets to you. As it closes, players are pushed inward. Wait inside instead of chasing them out.
Habits that build skill
12. Change one thing per session. One day, focus only on not dying to splits. The next, only on Storm timing. Small, focused practice works faster than playing on autopilot.
Bonus: the Daily Challenge gives you a specific goal each day, like "Eat 3 rival orbs", and builds a daily streak. It's a great way to practise one skill at a time.
FAQ
Why do I keep getting eaten right after I spawn? In Orb Arena you always spawn away from rivals big enough to eat you, with a 3-second shield, and for the first 45 seconds rivals mostly ignore orbs under 40 mass. Use that time to grow on pellets.
Is it better to be big or fast? Both, at different times. Fast when small, careful when big.
Do skins make you better? No. Orb Arena skins and trails are cosmetic only. They change how you look, not how you play.
What next? Learn how to split properly. It's the biggest single skill jump.
